At long last, summer is upon us, and it is already promising to be amazing.
For myself, summer means three months of helicoptering through Europe with the greatest friends on Earth, yachting if the mood strikes us. We will fly into Venice later tonight, and my family’s casa in Venice will serve as a homebase, treated to only the shortest of stays when the need for stability calls.
We might visit a hundred places, we might get caught up in one and stay there the entire summer. The only guarantee is that we visit one place we haven’t yet - and where will it be? That is only for someone new to decide, someone that we will meet in Venice - their answer to our question, tell us a city!, will be the only deciding factor deciding if travel to Iceland or Malta, a large city or a humble town.
It is probably the Venetian in me, but my favorite cities are those that are strongly water-based. They don’t have to be coastal; even a place like Paris, with the beautiful Sine running through it, joins Portofino, Monte Carlo, Saint Tropez, Cannes, and Barcelona at the very top of my list. Many of these places top my lovely friends’ lists as well, and will probably demand return visits over the next couple of months.
